2nd Amendment
The 2nd Amendment of the Constitution, ratified as part of the original Bill of Rights on December 15, 1791, states:
“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
As important as the entire wording of this Amendment is, it is the portion “…shall not be infringed.” that impresses upon the fact that this Amendment was meant to stay in its original state in perpetuity. Many attempts at banning certain firearms or restricting specific firearms designs have been effectively thwarted over the years. Recent actions by the Obama Administration, in response to the emotionally-charged events at the Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, almost 221 years to the day of the ratification of the 2nd Amendment, show that this inalienable Right will face another round of potential usurpation.
While nobody more than the law-abiding gun owner mourns for the loss of innocents at the hands of mentally-deficient perpetrators, it has become apparent that the gun abolitionists blame the tool, not the person, for these heinous acts. Talks of banning “assault rifles” (a true definition is TBD…) because of their “military applications” leads the way, even though it is proven by FBI statistics that this version of firearm is only used in .5% of weapons-related deaths in this Country. Again, blaming the tool, not the person.
The media and gun abolition (NOT “gun control” — we HAVE gun control) groups (GAGs) feed off that carnage and emotion. They want everyone to see the dead bodies and slurred speech while everyone stands around and pities the innocents, hates the perpetrator, and spews emotionally-generated rhetoric that makes them feel like they’re doing something about the problem. The issue I have with all that is that they make a statement, much like the mentally-deranged perpetrator, by exploiting the innocent as their emotional catalyst to further their agenda or persuade others to “see their point”.
What I believe many are missing is that the 2nd Amendment wasn’t made so people could target shoot or hunt, and anyone that tells you different is either lying or not well-informed. The purpose of the 2nd Amendment was to protect Citizens from tyranny and chaos. The main word here is PROTECT, which is what law-abiding Citizens do with their guns. Yes, some people hunt or target shoot but that is to put food on the table or become more proficient with their firearm. Weapons, such as the .223 Bushmaster and others like it, have a place of protection under the 2nd Amendment just for that reason — PROTECTION — and it is the agenda of some in this Country to take that protection away, even if it means that they exploit the bodies of children or the slurred speech of a former Congresswoman to push that agenda via emotional, not logical, means.
This page will address the 2nd Amendment, its history, its validity and its unnecessarily volatile existence. I will post reference documentation, news stories and other links and information that the Common Citizen can use to educate and disseminate, with the ultimate goal of personal, non-violent action in influencing your local, State and federal elected representatives.
